Oil, Coolant and the Maintenance People Skip

The two most skipped services are oil changes and cooling system service, and both of them end in an engine bill.

At a Glance

  • Oil and filter, done at your house or your workplace
  • Cooling system service, the one almost nobody books
  • Belts, filters, batteries and fluids
  • We look the car over while we are under it anyway

The Cheapest Hour You Will Ever Spend

Ask any mechanic what wrecks the most engines and you will get the same two answers. Oil changes and cooling system service. Skip those long enough and you are not buying an oil change any more, you are buying a water pump, a head gasket or an engine.

None of that is a scare tactic. It is just that both failures are slow and quiet until they are neither. Oil that has gone past its life stops protecting bearings. Coolant that has gone acidic eats the water pump and the heater core from the inside.

Right Behind Those Two

The other one is ignoring a small leak or a weak battery until it strands you and takes the starter or a module down with it. A slow coolant leak is a twenty dollar hose right up until it is an overheat on the interstate.

Why Doing It at Your House Actually Matters

An oil change is not hard. The reason people skip it is the two hours it costs them. If the car is in your own driveway while you work, or in the lot at your job, the reason to put it off mostly goes away. We are already under the car, so we look at the brakes, the belts, the tires and anything leaking while we are down there, and we tell you what we saw.

Questions We Get

Where does the old oil go?

Out with us. Auto fluid and battery recycling is part of what we do, so nothing is left in your driveway.

How often should the coolant be done?

Follow the interval in your owner's manual, because it varies a lot by coolant type and by manufacturer. If nobody can tell you when it was last done, that is usually the answer on its own.

Can you do this at my workplace?

Yes, and a lot of our maintenance work happens in a workplace lot during the day. Make sure your employer is fine with it first.
